IR PRE-CLERKSHIP ELECTIVE

The Introduction to Interventional Radiology preclinical elective is a semester-long course aimed at introducing first and second year students to the procedurally focused field of interventional radiology.

 

In this elective, students will attend organ-based lectures from interventional radiologists, as well as shadow cases in the IR department at RIH.

 

These lectures will follow the anatomy learned during the first year curriculum and will include a hands-on workshop learning how to use ultrasound and different IR tools.

OVERVIEW

The Introduction to Interventional Radiology preclerkship elective is a semester-long course aimed at introducing first and second year students to the procedurally focused field of interventional radiology. In this elective, students will attend organ-based lectures from interventional radiologists, as well as shadow cases in the IR department at RIH. These lectures will follow the anatomy learned during the first year curriculum and will include an ultrasound learning component. Students will be evaluated on an S/NC basis. Expectations include attendance at the lectures and the VIR symposium, shadowing in the clinic and IR suite, and a final (brief) case presentation.

PREREQUISITES: None.

COURSE OBJECTIVES

  • Increase exposure to the field of interventional radiology

  • Provide shadowing and mentorship opportunities in the department

  • Appreciate the broad scope of IR applications

  • Develop stronger anatomical understanding of the body and its applications in IR

  • Broaden their network within the field of interventional radiology

COURSE CONTENT

 

Seminars

Students must attend 6 discussion-based, interactive seminars led by IR residents and attendings, each focused on a specific area (including urogenital, neurology, oncology). Physicians will present cases they have encountered and discuss their management.

Shadowing

Students must shadow 2-3 cases with the IR team at RIH. Shadowing will take place in the VIR suites at RIH. Students will be paired with a resident or attending as a contact point to schedule shadowing. 

Final Presentation

Students will have the option to present a case of a patient they shadowed or present on a specific topic or procedure. These presentations will be 5-8 minutes in length and do not have to include visuals, though they may be helpful.

 

VIR Symposium

Students must attend the Northeast Regional VIR Symposium at AMS (9/27/20, 9:30am-5:00pm)
